Invest in a whisky distillery

>> Friday, February 29, 2008

http://www.bkwine.com/images/vote-2.gifLadybank Company of Distiller is a project behind a new single malt distillery in Scotland. They claim to be different than other distillery launch projects in that it is owned by the members of a club and not by shareholders (in what respect that is different is not clear). They are still open to new “members” / potential investors in the project so if you are interested in a foot hold in Scotland look here: www.whisky.co.uk.

Australian plans a vineyard in the centre of London

>> Thursday, February 28, 2008

http://www.bkwine.com/images/vote-2.gifThe Australian wine producer McGuigan Simeon plans to install (rather than plant) a vineyard in central London, in a square near Broadgate Arena. The public (passing pedestrians…) will be encouraged to take a walk among the vines and will then have the possibility to taste some of the McGuigan wines in a wine bar next to the vineyard. Seems to be a grand scale marketing stunt but it will no doubt cheer up a boring city square. thedrinksbusiness.com

Expensive wine tastes better conclude scientists

Sounds perhaps self evident to you and me. A scientific study at the California Institute of Technology designed an experiment where the same wine was served to a tasting panel and sometimes they were told it was cheap and sometimes that it was an expensive wine. The same wine was considered much better when the tasters had been told it was expensive. And it was not simply a question of them saying so. Magnetic resonance scans of the brain activity of the subjects showed that they actually perceived the wine as better. (On the other hand, is that so surprising? Did they ever hear about the placebo effect?) timesonline.co.uk

Bordeaux classic Lillet up for sale?

030728-3-k542-0030Lillet is the classic Bordelaise aperitif. It is made from a base of wine with some herbs and spices added – a bit like a vermouth. There is both a red and a white variant, the white being the classic colour, a touch drier that the red one. Reports have that the privately owned company is now up for sale and the drinks giant Pernod Ricard is rumoured as a potential buyer. http://www.bkwine.com/images/vote-2.gifwine-business-international.com

Italian exports up 14%

http://www.bkwine.com/images/vote-2.gifItalian wine exports are expected to grow with 14% in 2007. Italy is today the number one supplier of foreign wine in the US with a market share of 30% (compared to France in second place with only 22%). The second largest export market is Germany, but mainly for low budget wines (average price €1.10 per litre). The UK is in third place and, perhaps surprisingly, France takes fourth place (but with an average price per litre of a measly €0.59). wine-business-international.com

Belgian customs snaps the cork on 3288 bottles of ”champagne”

a0616-216-1631The Belgian customs has seized a shipment of 3288 bottles of sparkling André wine (produced by the Californian producer E&J Gallo) and destroyed the bottles (se video here: Decanter). The bottles were marked with the word “champagne” on the label. In California it is still permitted to use “champagne” as the description for any sparkling wine but within the EU (and in many other http://www.bkwine.com/images/vote-2.gifcountries) it may only be used for wine from the Champagne region in France. Which was the reason for the crush. reuters.com

New wine film: Bottle Shock

>> Monday, February 25, 2008

040923-139-3935A new wine film will soon open. It’s called Bottle Shock and is based on the real story of how an Englishman working in a wine shop in Paris in the 80s (now a famous wine writer and consultant, Steven Spurrier) organizes a blind wine tasting pitching classic French wines against unknown New World ones. The result is that the New World wines “win” to everyone’s surprise. The event goes under the name “the Judgment of Paris”. The movie is a (free) interpretation of the events. The main character is played by Alan Rickman (know e.g. as Snape in the Harry Potter films). Se the trailer here: Bottle Shock.

Wine entertainment on American Airlines

Grape Radio is a podcast (internet based radio channel) that is only about wine. It was founded in 2005 and has around 20,000 listeners. The “station” only broadcasts programs on wine – interviews, commentaries etc. Grape Radio recently sold the rights to a selection of their programs to be broadcast on American Airlines flights. Jay Selman, Grape Radio producer, says to Decanter that he thinks it may be a deciding factors when travellers choose airlines. Well perhaps. On the other hand, all you need is an iPod (or any modern phone) and you can download the programs to it and listen on any airline, or even in the car on your way to the airport. Her father Henrique Uva, chief winemaker, established it as an independent private winery a few years ago although it has been owned by the family since long. They make a range of interesting wines from Portuguese grape varieties such as Antao Vaz, Verdelho, Perrum, Aragnones and many more. Their range includes some very affordable wines up to the two premium cuvees Vinhas da Ira (Grapes of Wrath!) and the original Uvas Castas that is a blend of Douro and Alentejo grapes.

Moët fined €30,000 for an ad - Newspaper fined €5000 for publishing an article on wine

040923-139-3907The French anti-wine lobby has collected another win. LVMH, owner of the Champagne house Moët & Chandon, has been fined €30,000 by a Paris court for an ad campaign they ran in 2003/4 on the theme “la vie en rose”. It’s the state financed organization ANPAA (Association Nationale de Prevention en Alcoologie et Addictologie) who took the campaign to court.

The judgment says that the slogan used, together with the image (a champagne bottle surrounded by pink rose petals against a black background) violated advertising norms in that it had as aim to create an idea association between consumption of champagne and having a euphoric view on life (‘voire la vie en rose’).

One can only assume that the ANPAA sees the judgment as a great step forward in the fight against drug abuse and alcoholism in France. In some way they should no doubt motivate their allocated budget (70 million € if we remember the number correctly). And now they will have another €30,000. Perhaps they can spend it on celebrating the victory in champagne.

040923-139-3943_scThis comes close on the heels of another judgment where the French daily Le Parisien was fined €5000 for and article on champagne that did not carry a health warning (a purely editorial article that is. Not any advertising in this case). We understand that Le Parisien has no intention to appeal the ruling. Perhaps they think €5k now is cheaper than €30k in an appeal… Presumably their wine correspondent need to find another job. No doubt this will have an impact on the advertising revenue that French media will get from champagne houses (and others).

Read more about this astonishing development here decanter.com and here actualite.aol.fr, and why not the triumphal press release from the ANPAA www.anpaa.asso.fr. One wonders how long the French will stand having the ANPAA pushing this kind of activities. Some more background here: thepost.ie. ”This is a potentially dangerous product” says Patrick Elineau, director at ANPAA.

FIJEV, the international association of wine journalists, has created an online petition to protest against the court ruling that implies that editorial text, written by a journalist with the aim to inform, is considered equivalent to publicity. About the verdict in Le Nouvel Observateur nouvelobs.com. And in Decanter. Do sign this petition if you support the view that journalism is different than publicity and advertising: the petition. BKWine TV: Visual visit to Malhadinha Nova winery in Alentejo

>> Wednesday, February 13, 2008

http://www.bkwine.com/images/vote-2.gifA short visual visit to the Herdade da Malhadinha Nova winery and vineyard in Alentejo. Some views of the vineyards and surrounding landscape. Some bottles with their cute labels: designed by the Soares children: a cow by Matilde, a caterpillar by Francisca. The youngest, the son, has also made a label but he was too young to draw so it is just a hand imprint. It is also a farm with lots of oak trees to give acorns for the pigs (and what superb dry-cured ham!). A young ambitious family wine estate owned by the Soares family, making some very interesting Portuguese wines: Herdade da Malhadinha Nova, Alentejo, Portugal.

Bordeaux Primeurs under attack, again

http://www.bkwine.com/images/vote-2.gifJean-Claude Berrouet, ex-winemaker at Château Petrus in Pomerol, one of Bordeaux’ most expensive wines, writes critically about the primeur releases in Bordeaux. “The Primeurs” are presented each year in March after the vintage to a great hullabaloo of wine merchants and journalists who gather in hundreds if not thousands in Bordeaux for the event. Berrouet says that it is unreasonable to judge the wines “in a moment of madness” and that the wines have become more of a financial speculation item than a drink. Read more: decanter.com

For example, for white wines: Antao Vaz, Arinto and for red wines: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca (or Francesa), Tinto Roriz (Tempranillo), Aragones, Trincadeira.

Sogrape makes wine for example in Alentejo (where H. do Peso is) and also in the Douro region east of Porto.

BKWine Pick: Restaurant Afaria, Paris 15

am20-313-1371Between Porte de Versailles and Convention this Basque restaurant is hidden. A bright, welcoming restaurant with big windows to the street. The menu is a mix of Spanish and French south-west with some unusual twists. Very elegantly presented and innovative, and above all very, very delicious. The pumpkin soup with small morsels of artichoke and scallops was a dream. And the small ‘filet de rougets’ (red mullet) on ‘couscous au citronelle’ was excellent. We did not try the deserts (but we saw them!) and will be back to try the full menu. The owner and chef, Julien Duboué has previously worked in famous places such as Carré des Feuillants and Drouant and that certainly shows. http://www.bkwine.com/images/vote-2.gif Truth to be told it is not often you are so impressed by a restaurant. And one where the bill adds up to something very reasonable. A two course lunch for 22 euro, three courses in the evening for 30-40 euro. They also have a small bar and a big ‘table d'hôte’ (‘communal’ table) where you can have just a glass of wine and some tapas (Spanish roots ‘oblige’). The wine list has a good selection of wines primarily from the Languedoc and the South-West.

BKWine Pick: Maison Louis Jadot, Beaune

ap14-338-3851Jadot is a big négociant who makes wine from many different appellations in Bourgogne, from Chablis down to Beaujolais. The main office and winery is in Beaune at the centre of the Côte d’Or. But although they are big their way of making wine is more like a smaller producer giving high quality wines. Since a few years back they are working according to organic principles in the vineyards and each plot (lieu-dit), each premier cru, and grand cru are kept separate and fermented and vinified separately. Very well made wines ranging from ‘simple’ Bourgogne Pinot Noir http://www.bkwine.com/images/vote-2.gif to various Grand Crus. They also have an excellent Beaujolais from a beautiful chateau property, the Chateau de Jacque from Moulin-à-Vent.

BKWine TV: [E] Herdade do Esporao interview

>> Monday, February 11, 2008

http://www.bkwine.com/images/vote-2.gifInterview with winemaker Sandra Alves at Herdade do Esporao in Alentejo, Portugal. Sandra is one of three winemakers at the Esporao winery, Alentejo's probably biggest privately owned vineyard (500 hectares). She is one of three winemakers, the chief winemaker being David Baverstock (originating from Australia). They have a broad range of both white and red wines, some are fermented in oak barrels. ==========================

This is a short presentation, quoted from the Esporao web site:

"In the heart of Alentejo region, 180 Km south of Lisbon, in Reguengos de Monsaraz, the Herdade do Esporão was aquired by Finagra with the main porpuse of producing wines of great quality. From 1975 until 1979, the Herdade do Esporão was occupied during the revolutionary and agricultural periods. Only after this period Finagra was allowed to proceed the winery project. Our modern cellars were built in 1987. A new stage of Finagra project was acomplished. In 1989 the first wine "Esporão" was considered one of the best Portuguese wines and three years later the brand "Monte Velho" was launched.

In 1995, after our brands were considered among the best ones, new investments were made. A new area of vineyard was planted and the existent was completely renovated. A dam with 4.000.000 m3 capacity was built, feeding a drip irrigation system that covers all the vineyard. The purchase of Perdigões Estate, with 180 ha of vineyards, the expansion of the cellar and the construction of the wine tourism complex are some of the most recent investments of this dinamic company developing the "Herdade do Esporão"."

BKWine Pick: Château Lestrille, Entre-deux-Mers, Bordeaux

040917-133-3396The Roumage family has been making wine in St Germain du Puch since the end of the 19th century and now, for the first time, it is a woman, Estelle, who is in charge. She makes both white red and rosé. The rosé goes under the label ‘clairet’, which is a bordelaise style of rosé with a longer skin contact (12-18 hours) giving a bit more colour and body than a regular rosé. It’s 100% merlot and it’s full of red currant aromas. They also make two red Bordeaux Supérieurs, one http://www.bkwine.com/images/vote-2.gifred vinified in tank (soft and round tannins with a fresh fruit) and a Cuvée Tradition aged in oak barrels (more full-bodied and powerful with some added complexity).

050526-202-0233_nnSince 2002 it is run by the two young sisters Cathy and Sandrine Héraud, sixth generation winemakers in the family who owns this 28 hectare property in northern Médoc. They are both full of enthusiasm but also very focused on what they want to achieve. Cathy makes the wine and Sandrine takes care of marketing and sales. The vineyard is primarily on gravelly and stony soil, just like at the Grand Cru Classé chateaux further south in the Médoc, says Cathy. The wine is classic and well structured with good fruit and balance and have been steadily improving since the sisters took charge. http://www.bkwine.com/images/vote-2.gifIt can certainly pay off to venture all the way up to the northern Médoc where you can find this kind of wines for a mere 10€!

Welcome to the BKWine Brief nr 55, February 2008

Where to, French wine journalism?

In January there has been a number of remarkable court rulings in France around wine. The oddest one being when a court fined a French daily paper, Le Parisien, for having published an editorial article about champagne in December 2005. The “fault” of the paper was that they had not printed a warning text (as is compulsory on advertisements: “l’abus d’alcool est dangereux pour la santé”). And the court considered that the article (and I repeat, a purely editorial piece) was close in spirit to an advertisement so it should have carried a warning message. The fine was €5,000. This whole thing is driven by a French organization called ANPAA, state financed (!) with a budget of some €60-70 million. Apparently they see articles on wine and advertisements for champagne as a driving force behind the evil forces dragging young people (and others) down into drug abuse and misery… Read more further down in the Brief. And if you don’t quite agree with this do consider signing the on-line petition protesting against the court ruling equating journalistic articles with advertisements. You will find the link to the petition further down. At the same time, large sums of public money is spent on supporting wine producers in financial difficulties. And the EU allocates substantial budgets to promoting the consumption of EU wine – outside the EU… Try understanding that logic if you can.

Wine Travel

http://www.bkwine.com/images/vote-2.gif Our upcoming Wine, Truffles and Foie Gras trip is approaching (sorry, it’s fully booked) and we are looking forward to meeting all the participants on that tour. We are just finalizing the final details on the program and I can certainly promise you that the truffles lunch looks very mouth watering – not to speak about the rest.

At the beginning of June we have the “Three Classics” tour that takes you to three of the most interesting and classical wine regions of France: We begin in Champagne, continue south to Chablis and end up in the heart of Burgundy in the Côte d’Or. This is the perfect trip for the wine enthusiast who wants to se a lot of France in a short time – and taste many a good wine on the private wine tastings that we have organized. Just at the beginning of June, when the vineyards are bursting with growth and evenings are wonderfully warm… See below for details.

We will soon have finalized the autumn wine tour program too. The dates to put in your diary are:
- Bordeaux, 8-12 October
- Douro, Porto in Northern Portugal, 22-26 October

More details on these wine tours soon!

And don’t forget that we also do custom tours. If you want to go to that special place with a small group, or perhaps organize a special event with your company or your wine tasting club, do get in touch. We have all the behind-the-scenes contacts to make sure that you will have a really unique experience and an unforgettable trip. Just call me or send me an email if you are interested.

Wine videos – Beta

We have started an experiment with wine videos – interviews with winemakers, visits to vineyards and more. At this moment we are experimenting what this medium can do. It’s actually quite a lot of fun. The clips are sometimes in English and sometimes in French. You can see all of our wine videos on our YouTube Channel: www.youtube.com/bkwine. If you like the videos you can subscribe to our updates by clicking “subscribe” on YouTube. As I said, it is still an experiment so we are very grateful for any comments on what you think about it. Perhaps we can sell it to Air France or some other airline as an in-flight video channel!? (see the news item below on Grape Radio)
